Five signatories to the Declaration of Independence hailing from New Jersey—Abraham Clark, John Hart, Francis Hopkinson, Richard Stockton, and John Witherspoon—placed their names on a document that expressed a collective commitment to liberty. Here, their signatures meet the voices and visions of Hackensack today.
As Hackensack celebrates America’s 250th anniversary, My Signature : My Declaration invites the community to reflect on the meaning of a name, a signature, and a shared declaration. Glowing tablets throughout the Green feature signatures and personal declarations by local artists and community members, while an immersive soundscape brings their musical contributions together. On October 3 and 4, animated signatures will also be projected onto the historic Church on the Green, whose walls preserve the names of its earliest congregants.
For centuries, Hackensack Green has been a place for public gathering, celebration, and civic life. This installation continues that tradition—inviting you to discover names from the past, encounter the creative voices of the present, and consider what you would declare for the future.
